Strategic Self-defense & Grappling Tactics
Level One & Level Two Courses
SSGT Level One Instructor Course Objectives
Prerequisite - Must be a POST Certified Law Enforcement or Corrections Officer employed by an agency.
By the end of this course, a certified Level One SSGT Instructor will be qualified to:
1. Teach officers to defend against common grabs, holds, strikes and attacks on the officer’s weapon in standing situations.
2. Teach officers to defend against common grabs, holds, strikes and attacks on the officer’s weapon when the struggle is on the ground.
3. Teach officers how to gain control and compliance over an actively aggressive subject in both standing and ground grappling situations.
4. Teach officers to defend against a knife or other sharp instrument attack.
5. Instill self-confidence in the officer’s ability to defend him/herself against an attack.
6. Certify law enforcement officers in the SSGT Sixteen (16) Hour Level One student Course.
The preceding objectives will reduce the possibility of a Certified Student or Instructor using excessive force in controlling a subject, thus reducing liability.
Level One Course Breakdown
The Level One Instructor and Student Courses are broken down into seven Categories as follows:
1. Standing Grab Defense- against wrist grabs, throat grabs, hair grabs and lapel grabs.
2. Headlock Defense- against a rear headlock, front headlock and side head-locks both standing & on the ground.
3. Bear-hug Defense- against front over and under the arms and rear over and under the arms.
4. Tackle Defense- against double leg and single leg tackles.
5. Striking & Knife Defense- against various strikes and cutting instruments.
6. Escaping From The Bottom (ground)- Escapes from the mounted position and side positions.
7. Controlling A Grounded Subject From The Top- various controlling techniques designed to enable the officer to place the subject into a position for handcuffing.
•Written and Practical Exams are administered in both the Instructor and Student Courses.
•Instructors may certify Students in one or all Categories of a particular level.
•Student Certification is valid for one year.
•Instructor Certification is valid for three years, provided the officer teaches 8 hours per year.
•Level One Instructor course is $500.00 / officer.

SSGT Level Two Instructor Course Objectives
Prerequisite - Must be a Certified Level One Instructor.
By the end of this course, a Certified Level Two SSGT Instructor will be qualified to:
1. Teach officers to defend against common grabs, holds and strikes in standing situations.
2. Teach officers to defend against common grabs, holds, strikes and attacks on the officer's weapon when the struggle is on the ground.
3. Teach officers how to gain control and compliance over a subject in a ground grappling situation.
4. Teach officers to defend against a knife attack.
5. Teach officers long gun disarming techniques.
6. Teach officers long gun retention techniques.
7. Teach officers handgun disarming techniques.
8. Teach officers handgun retention techniques.
9. Instill self-confidence in the officer's ability to defend him/herself against an attack.
10. Certify law enforcement officers in the SSGT Eight (8) Hour Level Two Student Course.
These preceding objectives will reduce the possibility of a Certified Student or Instructor using excessive force in controlling a subject, thus reducing liability.
Level Two Course Breakdown
The Level Two Instructor and Student Courses are broken down into nine categories:
1. Headlock Defense- against a rear head-lock, front head-lock, lying side head-lock, and a full-nelson.
2. Standing Knife Defense- in case your environment disallows you from doing the bicycle kick.
3. In-holster Handgun Retention
4. Out-of-holster Handgun Retention (standing up and on the ground)
5. Handgun Disarming
6. Long Gun Retention
7. Long Gun Disarming
8. More Escapes From The Bottom.
9. More Controlling A Grounded Subject From The Top- besides covering new material in Level Two, we expand on some of the Level One Techniques and answer some “what if” questions about those techniques.
