The Equalizer Women's Self-defense Program

A INTRODUCTION TO THE EQUALIZER
In 1997, Johnny Lee Smith founded and developed the Strategic Self-defense & Grappling Tactics (SSGT) program, a defensive tactics program for law nforcement. His program is the largest of its kind in the Southeastern United States with over 650 law enforcement trainers teaching SSGT to thousands of officers every year. SSGT has been responsible for saving officers from serious injury and death in the line of duty.

Johnny later developed The Equalizer Women's Self-defense (EWSD) Program. This program empowers women to recognize and avoid violent situations. The program also gives women the tools they need to survive and escape physically violent situations should they be attacked. This program is taught by Certified Law Enforcement Officers throughout the Southeastern United States.

He then developed The Equalizer System Of Personal Safety. This system consists of two, nonphysical, programs: The General Safety Education Program and The Residential Security Education Program. These programs provide educational materials for men, women and teens on how to avoid being victimized by violent crime and property crime.

The (EWSD) Program educates participants in the following areas:

Phase One:
A) The facts concerning assault, sexual assault, rape, date rape, stalking, how to avoid possibly dangerous situations situations (personal safety and residential security), what to do if one becomes a victim of violence, who can help in the aftermath of a violent attack, and the law and self-defense.
B) Striking Defense & Defensive Striking Techniques

Phase Two:
A) Common Grab Defenses

Phase Three:
A) Rear Head-lock Defense
B) Bear-hug Defenses
C) Striking & Knife Defense

Phase Four:
A) Ground Escapes

The EWSD Program's Phases One & Two are the least physically demanding and Phases Three & Four being the most physically demanding. This program was designed with the understanding that most women do not have a lot of time to spend on self-defense training and that many people are not physically able to perform certain techniques. Therefore, a participant may choose to only go through Phase One because four hours is all the time they have to spare. Likewise, a participant may choose to only go through Phases One and Two because they do not have the physical fitness level to go through Phases Three and Four. By structuring the program this way, we are able to provide training, however limited, to almost everyone.

OUR EWSD INSTRUCTOR COURSE
Completion of this course will qualify participants to instruct the EWSD Program. This course includes step-by-step instructions, instructor manual, written exam, practical exam and an instructor development section. This course is available to male and female certified law enforcement and education professionals.

Our EWSD Student Course
This class is available to females 13 years of age and above. Only currently certified EWSD Instructors are allowed to teach this course.

WHY THE EWSD PROGRAM IS NEEDED
Every year, millions of women are victimized by violence. Usually at the hands of someone they know. Every woman should know how to recognize and reduce their risk of becoming a victim and how to effectively resist a physical attack, if necessary. Every woman should be “Prepared in Advance”.

In 2005 there were 2,145,340 reported cases of violent crimes against women. These crimes included rape/sexual assault; robbery; aggravated assault; and simple assault. (Reference National Crime Victimization Survey, 2005)
